Togo
Stretching in a narrow ribbon of land from the savannah down to the coast, Togo has become known primarily for its beautiful beaches, but this West African country has much more as well. Lomé the capital is where you get the sense of the real Togo, with the bustling, colourful Grand Marche at its heart. Togoville lies on the northern shore of Lake Togo, and was formerly an embarkation point for the slave trade; slaves who took their belief in voodoo across the Atlantic to Haiti. The Tamberma Valley is another must-see – a collection of fortified villages from the 17th century that are still lived in today.
