Armenia claims to be one of the oldest Christian countries on earth, and the sense of history is palpable. Over the years this tiny country has produced a huge diaspora, and there are Armenian communities all over the world. The town of Echmiadzin is the centre of the church in Armenia, and all over the country there are imposing churches, cathedrals and monasteries. From the site of Khor Virap, where Gregory, patron saint of Armenia was imprisoned, it's possible to make out Mount Ararat - resting place of Noah's Ark, according to the Bible - which was once part of Armenia, but today lies in present-day Turkey.
