A vast country of surreal landscapes and endless steppe, Kazakhstan was under Soviet rule for most of the 20th century, becoming independent in 1991. An Islamic country, Kazakhstan has a distinctive culture based on a nomadic history – even today you can still see nomads practicing a traditional way of life, such as hunting with golden eagles. Kazakhstan has more than just wide open spaces and steppe, however. The Alatau is a spur of the Tian Shan mountain range running through Kazakhstan which offers superb hiking and mountaineering.
