Lithuania has always had an eye on central Europe, and the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania stretched south as far as the Black Sea by the 16th century. The capital Vilnius is known for its beautiful buildings which rival Prague for Baroque splendour and has a thriving arts scene. In the south of Lithuania you can explore the Baltic Coast's greatest natural wonder, the Curonian Spit, almost 100km long and consisting of sand dunes, rustic villages and pine forests. Perhaps the most famous sight in Lithuania is Siauliai, a hill covered in thousands of crosses that were repeatedly bulldozed in Soviet times but which kept reappearing.
