Egypt is where Imaginative Traveller started many, many years ago. Arrival was great! I was met by a driver who was holding up an Imaginative Traveller sign – he was waiting at the baggage reclaim for us. On arrival there were also another 3 solo female travellers who were joining the tour, all were very friendly in their mid-thirties and I felt like I would bond with them for the week away.

Cruising the Nile on the private MS Melodie
In March 2009, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend three days cruising the Nile aboard Imaginative Traveller’s very own Nile cruiser, the MS Melodie. I really had no preconceived ideas about what I was going to experience – would it be a dirty, smelly, cramped cruise on a noisy, crowded River Nile. Or would it be the serene, relaxing experience that I’d read about in books and seen on TV?

Matt West on Cairo Heart of the City Tour
Unable to experience a full Egypt tour I restricted myself to a shortened Heart of the City tour plus half a day of checking out the Pyramids, the sun boat, Great Sphinx and Egyptian museum. My half day on foot seeing the real Cairo was fantastic. The sights, sounds and smells are amazing and two of the highlights were climbing to the top of the Bab Zuweyla gate and also finding a genuine Fez hat craftsman at work - a hat I could start my hats of the world collection from!
