We are planning to go on the Road to Zanzibar safari (Kenya/Tanzinia, and have heard conflicting stories about the availability of ATMs/bank facilities. Some friends advised to take just US dollars in cash, with a few travellers checks just in case. Others have said they had great difficulty finding anywhere to cash the cheques on Zanzibar. I would prefer not to carry around $$$$$ but also don't want to worry about running out of cash either.

I have copied the following advice from our East Africa country dossier, available from [url=http://www.imtravdossiers.com]www.imtravdossiers.com[/url]
"...Banks and Bureau de Change facilities can be found throughout Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It is advisable to exchange money at banks, in large hotels, and authorised Bureau de Change. It is usually possible to exchange money at Nairobi airport on arrival, although the Bureau de Change does not normally accept traveller

Thanks! I think I will cover all bases- mainly cash but with travellers cheques and credit card as back up.
