Hi there,

We're planning our honeymoon and was planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and do a safari in the Serengeti or somewhere similar. Is this going to be enjoyable or a complete nightmare? Has anyone been?

Love to hear from you

Ta

Hi Greenworm

Thanks for your post.

Whether you would find Kilimanjaro really tough or a little more easy going depends very much on you - however, you will need to have a good level of fitness before you attempt to climb it, as it is a strenuous trek, reaching almost six thousand metres. You would need to prepare thoroughly for this by doing some hillwalking before you leave, as well as other exercises - it is not something to be taken lightly.

The Marangu Route is easier but you'll encounter more trekkers, whereas the Umbwe Route is less frequented and a bit tougher - although more scenic. On the Marangu Route you would stay in mountain huts, and on the Umbwe Route you would sttay in tents.

Having said all of this, personally I think it would make a great honeymoon, as long as the two of you are fit enough - it would certainly be one with a difference! Combining it with a safari in the Serengeti would help to add a relaxation element to it as well and ensure that it's not all strenuous.

I hope that this helps. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Re: Honeymoon in Tanzania

hello--i was interested in the 15-day kilimanjaro/safari trip as well. i was thinking about doing this tour in december. if anybody has done this trek and summited uruhu peak...this would be my dream vaca so hoping for the best possible experience so would love to hear your experiences and thoughts on a successful trip to africa's highest mountain. here are some other questions:

-what's the trekking weather like on the mountain during december?
-how is the trek on the umbwe route?
-how is the game viewing in the SERENGETI and NGORONGORO CRATER?
-how many people are signed up so far for this trip?
-best airfare prices or websites to nairobi from california, U.S.A.

any information or help would be much appreciated.

thank you.

Re: Honeymoon in Tanzania

Hi Albert,

Please check out the below link, it is the trip dossier for the Kilimanjaro, Serengeti & Crater Safari. It has a paragraph on the Umbwe route, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater and it also has lots more useful information that you will need.

http://www.imtrav.com/dossiers/ktks.pdf

The weather on the trek is very cold and it snows all year round, it doesn't really matter what time of year you go you still need at least a -8 sleeping bag, a warm pair of gloves, hat etc - a packing list can also be found on the dossier.

If you would like to send me a private email with the date you are interested in then we can discuss availability etc.

I hope this helps and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sam
