Hi, We're going on this trip on Sept 19th. Anyone else booked this date? Has anyone who's done this trip got any tips or stories? What is the hotel like in Kovalam? Should we book some extra nights there at the end?
Thanks, Pam and Ian.

Re: Backwaters of Kerala

Hi Pam and Ian,
I've recently been to South India on this trip! Great choice by the way! You'll have an amazing time there, I found it very easy to slip into the slow and relaxed pace of life the people are extremly friendly and their traditions and religions are facinating.
I've had a look to see who else has booked, you're the only ones at the moment, but don't worry it's still early days plenty of time for more people to confirm.
As for tips I would recommend a waterproof jacket or umberella for your visit to Periyar national park in Thekkady, and beacause you'll be travelling just after the monsoon, so you may experience a few small showers.
The accommodation in Kovalam is right on the beach, you can hear the waves crashing at night, it's situated in the centre of the main bay in Kovalam, very central! The accommodation itself is all en suite, with towels provided, ceiling fans, refrigerators, very secure and clean, all rooms have balcony's facing the sea. I would definately recommend booking some extra nights accommodation at the end as Kovalam is very peaceful and relaxing and after the tour will be much appreciated, it will also give you an opportunity to have an "Ayurvedic Massage" which is a very interesting experience.
If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Gemma

Re: Backwaters of Kerala

I just got back, having done the Backwaters tour in February. Gemma describes it well. It's hard to imagine needing rain gear, but February and September are completely different seasons. Felix, the tour leader, had much to do with making the trip so easy and with how well the group of 13 interacted. I only regretted not choosing to do the whole South India Adventure tour. I did stay on at the base hotel in Kovalam, Pappukutty Beach Resort, and found it to be extremely comfortable, convenient and accommodating. Easy to meet people.

I earlier posted a query about exchanging money on that trip. Having been there, I'll now say that the advice given wasn't quite right. If you are being picked up at the airport, you won't need any cash before checking in at the hotel. In Kovalam (the first base on the tour) it's MUCH easier to use travellers cheques than ATMs. Good rates and no service fee at places near the hotel. Later in the tour there are ATMs easily accessible in Madurai and Cochin, but not in smaller places. In any case, added expenses are pretty low.

My one reminder would be to have bug repellant, and use it. The bugs there seem to bite painlessly, so you can't count on knowing when they're out and about. Finally, leave lots of room for purchases, and be prepared to bargain. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
