I'm flying in to Beijing at 5:00 p.m. on a Friday night. Will I have trouble getting a taxi? Would it be better to pay my hotel extra to have someone meet me?

Hi Lindamae,

If you are in the UK then you can send me a private message with your reference number and I can let you know how much it will be now to add on one nights hotel and a transfer at this late stage. If you are booked through an international agent then you will need to contact them regarding the cost of this.

However, it will most likely be considerably cheaper to arrange it when you get there. Below are some notes about making your own way from the China country dossier:

Exit the arrivals building and look to the left for the taxi rank. Here you will be able to find a metered taxi to take you to the hotel meeting point (make sure the taxi driver turns the meter on when you get in). The best taxis to take are the small red ones with a sticker saying

Re: Beijing airport transfers

I have now joined 4 Imtrav tours. Regardless of when I arrived, provided I was staying at the starting Point Hotel, an airport transfer was included in the standard tour cost, Has this changed.

Hey Wayne,

Thanks for your post.

As with the other tours you have taken, you get a free arrival transfer to the starting point. This can be arranged by simply letting your booking agent know your travel details and a representative will be there to greet you.

All the best,

Robert

Re: Beijing airport transfers

It is best to be prepared as to what to do at the airport and how to get a taxie to the meeting point. We had a pre arranged transfer in Delhi. There is a lot of confusion at the airport when you come out with at least 100 people holding up signs with names or hotels on them You walk by them hoping to see the one you want. Then you walk back again as you can't find your representative. You walk by again to no avail. The security (Police?) finally tell you to get moving and does not allow you to inspect the signs again. Thank goodness we were prepared, just in case, and knew enough to get a pre paid taxie slip at the right Kiosk.
Just be prepared for emergencies and no shows and follow the advice given in the brochures you are sent by the Tour Company. All will turn out O.K. Have a wonderful holiday wish it was me going

Re: Beijing airport transfers

Hello there,

The Imaginative Traveller Representative always has a very clear sign with the company logo clearly displayed. Whilst I appreciate what Ballylawn says, thousands of people travel with us every year and problems with the transfers are few and far between. Details of the arrival hotel are in the documents everyone receives prior to departure and so should the unlikely occur and you search long and hard for the representative to no avail, yes get a cab. But I can guarantee that as long as we are aware of your flight arrangements the representative will be there, as if not we would not offer this service of great benefit. Also remember that if your leave the airport, they will be there, wondering where you are potentially affecting the tour and other arriving travellers.

What Ballylawn says is perhaps accurate in a handful of cases and good advice, however I would by no means prepare yourself to be let down by The Imaginative Traveller as it does not happen.

All the best,

Robert

would certainly not leave the airport without

Re: Beijing airport transfers

I am sure Beijing will not be like Delhi. which is overcrowded, and we were there at the height of the tourist season which did not help. Also we arrived in the middle of the night. I was not trying to upset or scare anyone travelling on their own. Just to be prepared in case. I have had no trouble on any other tour we took with immaginative traveller the Rep was there to greet us no problem. As you said they have a very clear sign held up for all to see.
Delhi is especially bad as everyone is trying to make a few rupees so I think every hotel has a tout with a sign ,every local tour group also. Then you have people's names on signs and individuals hoping to get you to use them as a guide. Also I was told that sometimes the person that is supposed to be there hires someone else to hold up the sign for a few rupees while he gets a coffee or makes a call etc, that person takes off as soon as the rep is out of sight hence no sign. Yes it is rare and probably only in Delhi but I always say be prepared for the unexpected and don't sweat the small stuff. I have been on 15 tours with different tour companies and imaginative is by far the best so keep up the good work. I will be back for more.

I had no trouble in either place. Delhi is certainly a madhouse.I was delayed 1.5 hr while the baggage conveyor was repaired. The rep was still there for me when I got out .He waited. Thats part of the appeal for me of India. Beijing is all peace and calm, and things seemed to happen with little fuss.

Hey there,

Thanks for the post.

You will have no problems whatsoever. Airports all over the world are very well serviced by taxis and Beijing is no exception to this.

All the best,

Robert
