We are considering the China Insight tour for October or November 2002. We'd appreciate feedback on what to expect as far as weather, comfort level, what was best, worst and any advice.

Re: China Insight

Hi Rubinstein2r

I hope to help you a little bit here, though you may wish to hear from other travellers who have been on this tour instead?

China experiences great diversity in climate. Spread over such a vast area, the country is subject to extremes in weather. There is heavy snowfall in northern regions like Beijing in winter, whilst Hong Kong in the south is warm all year round with temperatures seldom falling below 20 even in winter. We do not operate our tours to China during the winter months.

Overall, Spring (March-April) and autumn (September-October) are considered the best seasons to travel. Even so, our tours cover vast areas, so weather conditions may vary considerably during the tour. Temperatures rise to around 25 degrees in the summer, peaking around 30 in July and August. July sees the highest rainfall in most parts of the country, so summer can be very humid. Sixty percent humidity is not unusual. Night times however can be bitterly cold in places!

This China Insight tour is a 'Traveller' style tour which means that the accommodation is generally in 3 star hotels, with en-suite facilities and almost always air conditioning.

Bear in mind that hotels are an integral part of the country and, as such, can suffer from common problems like electrical failure, plumbing faults or other technical difficulties.

Sleeper trains in China are relatively comfortable with 4 berths per cabin. A pillow and towelling blanket is provided though it is strongly suggested that you bring with you a cotton sleeping sheet.

As for what is best/worst etc.. on this tour, that may be better coming from a fellow traveller rather than someone working for Imtrav!!

However...

This tour includes as many of Chinas 'highlights' as we could squeeze in!

A Yangtse river cruise, The Three Gorges, Cycling in Yangshuo, Chinese Acrobats, The Terracotta warriors and that's just some of it, plus loads of free time in Beijing and Xi'an to do as much sightseeing, shopping, eating and drinking as you like!

Cheers & all the best for the New year!!
