We just did a trip to Turkey this spring with Imtrav. We are thinking of going to China sometime in 2002. We were wondering when the best time of year is to travel to China. Hint: neither of us like excessively hot and humid weather or daily rain and we get quite enough snow where we live already...
Thanks for the info

Re: china weather

Hey Rick & Michele,

How are you guys? I was the young Aussie chick - Mel - on the same Turkey trip in May. How've you been, this is so trippy, you know i was just thinking about you last night as i was writing a reply to a letter from Dotty & Bob (the elderly US couple). How's the not so new job anymore Michele? And how is the cat training going now? Are they still the kids substitutes they sounded like when you were talking about them in the Rami restaurant in Istanbul? My Ollie has just come down to the loungeroom and has started squawking for food.

Hey i know absolutely nothing about the weather in China, but did you know Ian is doing tours there now? Well at least until November, when he is off to Egypt. Maybe you'll run into him! Work is heaps boring and uni is great but that's because i am on semester break. I'm thinking about doing a further two years study to qualify as a speech & language pathologist, but i'm not 100% sure. It'll certainly cut out any major trips i want to do, like Morocco, China, Thailand, and of course, back to Turkey.

Ireally hope you are both well and happy.

With much love, Mel

Re: china weather

We just got back from the October China Explored and it rained most of the time until we got to the south of China (which is towards the end of the tour). Ironic since all of us picked Oct. because Lonely Planet said it was the month with the least rain. Maybe Sep. would be better - it would probably also be a little warmer in the North - in Oct. it was a bit cold (it snowed one day at the great wall!) and the locals said the past couple of years it had been getting cold in Beijing at the end of Sep./early Oct. The South of China will be humid whenever you go - it's always humid - but at least it's not cold!

Re: china weather

We went to northern China (Beijing-inner Mongolia-Xi'an-Beijing) in 1999, end September/begining Oct. A fantastic holiday. Weather mild and quite pleasant until inner Mongolia where frost on ground and freezing cold in yurts! High pollution level in towns. Wore jeans and short-sleeved t-shirt during day plus a fleece in evenings (except in I.M where wore all the clothes we had taken with us in layers!)Rained one day - on edge of Tengger desert and sat on camels with polythene sheeting across knees. Made no difference to enjoyment though.
Just off to southern China and presuming it will be a lot warmer!

Re: china weather

It's been two years ago now since I was in China. I did the Great China Adventure in june 1999, and I can tell you about the weather then.

In the North (=Shanghai and further north), it was mainly sunny, hot and dry. I found it still easy to manage, as long as you drink enough. We had only one rainy day there.
In the south (Guilin, Yangshou, Hong Kong) it was warm and humid, with rain and sun equally divided. (But what do you expect: it's rain forest there!)

I'm not sure what the best period would be to travel in China, but I suppose it will be april and may, since it's not so hot in the north yet. If you go south, it will be humid and you will have days of rain inevitably.
But don't let this stop you visit this wonderful and beautiful country. I loved every minute of my trip, good weather or not!

Hope this helps!

Robert Hamers.

Re: china weather

I have just returned of a brilliant China Explored tour on Thursday. The weather was in the main quite warm especially compared to at home in Ireland. Beijing was ~21C X'ian to Yichang was slightly cooler about 18-20C but it got quite warm in Guilin and HKG with about 23-26C so all in all it was very pleasant although having a fleece was useful in the evenings. I brought a jacket but I never used it - I had anticipated it being alot cooler but we went around in shirt sleeves and shorts for alot of the time. Enjoy your planning - I only wish that my trip hadn't finished!!
