I'm thinking of trying Doxycycline for Malaria since I had such a terrible experience with Larium. Anyone out there have any advice or "warnings" for Doxycycline?

Much obliged.

Hi Dan,

I've used doxy 3 times now and haven't had a problem with it. Your public health nurse will always recommend which type of medication is most effective on the strain of malaria in the country you will be visiting. I've opted with doxy every time because I'd rather deal with physical side-effects of sun sensitivity and constipation as opposed to a drug that's capable of giving me nightmares. Just make sure you've got lots of sun screen (especially if you're fair) and to be honest, you system usually gets thrown off in most of these countries so the "constipation" side-effect tends to result in just keeping you regular! Best of luck in your travels.

Re: Doxycycline

In case you're interested, I ended up using a new drug called Malarone (1 pill a day). No problems!
