With the exchange rate etc etc is it just as acceptable to take pound sterling travellers cheques rather than $. What about cash? I suppose US $ would be better than pound sterling in cash wouldn't it?

Travellers cheques are acceptable in both sterling and US$. I you're bringing some cash then US$ are still the easiest currency to deal with.
