I am considering the China Explored trip in Sept/Oct 2002 because I'm dying to see the Yangtze River before it's flooded. I know summer would be miserably hot and humid. What's the weather like in the fall?

My brother lived in a remote part of China a few years ago and said I should get vaccinated (for ?) so I'm less likely to get sick if I'm going to be eating/living more like a local than a tourist. Is he just being an overprotective brother?

Also, I'm not squeamish about most bugs, mice, etc. but I do have a problem with large cockroaches invading my bed or shower. Do I have to worry about that? Just want to know if I need to bring my can of bug spray.

I would love to hear about the good (and bad?) from anyone who has taken this trip. Don't worry - you won't deter me with stories of bugs or other nasties, but I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks!

Re: Questions on China Explored

Hi Rachel,

Temperatures rise to around 25 degrees in the summer, peaking around 30 in July and August. July sees the highest rainfall in most parts of the country, so summer can be very hot & humid.

Overall, Spring and Autumn are considered the best seasons to travel to China. Around the mid 20's on average and not too much rain fall. Even so, our tours cover vast areas, so weather conditions may vary considerably during the tour.

China, like many other countries in Asia, has its fair share of nasties with regards to health. As you can appreciate I am not qualified to recommend any particular vaccinations etc.. Please consult your doctor for up to date information.

One of the main criteria we look for when choosing our tour accommodation is cleanliness. This goes for the hotel and cruise boat accommodation on this tour as swell, so it is unlikely you will be sharing your bed with giant cockroaches, however they still tend to come as part & parcel with any trip to Asia, so if they are a real problem to you then some cockroach exterminator may well be your best defence!
