We (husband and wife) are joining Rajasthan Explorer on Nov. 5. This will be our first trip to India. We would like to hear from others who will be on that trip.

Some questions: Is a backpack better to take than a suitcase? Are ATMs widely available? What about availability of western-style toilets?

Re: Rajasthan Explorer Nov. 5

Hi sage travelers,

I'm booked on the same tour but it's also my first trip to India so I can only comment on the luggage issue:
I did similar style (i.e. using trains / public bus / taxis) trips in Southeast Asia and Latin America. While we never had to carry our luggage far or for long, there were occasions where we had to climb stairs with it (railway or bus terminals) or walk along dirt road. In such cases, the wheels that normally make suitcases rather convenient don't help much. Depending on the size of the suitcase, the overhead storage on the trains might also be an issue.
See you soon in Delhi!
Regards
Mark

Thanks Mark. We're looking forward to meeting you. We'll give serious consideration to taking backpacks instead of suitcases. Comments and suggestions from other travellers are welcome!
