Sri Lanka - Troubles

I am due to go to Sri Lanka at Christmas and am obviously concerned about the current state of play there. I know these things flare up in Sri Lanka every year or so. What I need to know is if this flare up seems any worse than any of the others.

I am presuming here of course that ImTrav are still going run the tour.

Bit of an early post maybe but hey...

Thanks for any advice

Greg

Re: Sri Lanka - Troubles

Hi all,

With regard to the recent military action in Sri Lanka:

Although the situation in Sri Lanka is currently calm, the upcoming referendum could well be a catalyst for more disturbances. In light of this we have taken the decision to close the following Sri Lanka Discovery (HTSL) tours:

11/08/01
25/08/01
08/09/01

We are in the process of contacting everybody involved with the tour. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact me on the following address - chris@imtrav.co.uk

At the time of writing the next available Sri Lanka Discovery tour departs 22/09/01.

Chris/Ru

Any news on Sri Lanka for December? Yes I have seen all the posts in the middle eastern section (very good reading.. well mostly). I am after more of a traveller to traveller, off the record response, rather than the official line.

All replies taken off the record.

Cheers

Greg

Re: Sri Lanka - Troubles

Hi Greg,

You may be pleased to know that all tours to Sri Lanka are going ahead as normal. We are still getting very good feed back from the group there as I write to you.

I am a traveller myself and have been into some very unstable countries. Of course, it is only natural to be apprehensive, nervous, or reluctant to travel to these places. But lets face it... where else is truly stable these days? The Foreign office are not advising people to stay away (except the obvious areas of the North and East), only to be extra vigilant and to try to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.

I feel that common sense would be an asset. Sri Lanka is a stunning country and shouldn't be avoided unless there was strong evidence to do otherwise. Everywhere, security has been greatly strengthened, especially at the airport.

Above all have a superb time!!

Cheers Ru
