Hello there,

I'm heading out on the Journey across China trip at the end of March and have a question concerning footware for the trek portion. I'm aprhensive about lugging my hiking boots around for three weeks to use them for only two days. Has anyone done this hike without them and what do they recommend and for those who did take them am I just making an issue out of nothing? I want to pack as light as possible as I want to bring home as much as I can.

Thanks very much,
Mandy

Re: Tiger Leaping Gorge

Hi Mandy,

The trek in Tiger Leaping Gorge is hard work and footing can be treacherous. We really do recommend that you bring light hiking boots with ankle support.

I understand that you don't want to carry these about with you for the 3 weeks, but you may use them more than you think. The walk along the Great Wall is between 3-5 hours, and there will be extensive walking around sites that could warrant having a decent pair of boots?

If they don't fit into your baggage, especially when you have all those souvenirs, you could always tie them to the outside or when boarding the plane, carry them on as hand luggage (providing they've had a good airing!!).

Otherwise you could pick up a cheap pair of boots (but wear them in first) and then perhaps give them away afterwards?

Cheers
