which pair of shoes for south india adventure

I need some help:
Which kind of shoes are the best choise for the south india adventure?
Maybe one pair of sandal and one pair of walking shoes (leather)?

I hope somebody had have experiences before and can give me some hints.

Thanks for your post.

I have consulted my colleague who recently returned from South Indian and she took a pair of sandals/flip flops for general use and some trainers for the jungle walking. Apparently these were fine.
