The Rhubarb Road - 22 August
Hi deejay85,
I'm one of your 5(so far) fellow travellers, although I see that on the website the trip is closed for further bookings, so I am not sure if there will be any others. Let's hope we all get on together!
There seems to have been a bit of confusion about the number going on the trip - before I booked I was told there were 2 places left, and the normal maximum is 12, but then I was told there were only 5. As some other trips overlap parts of our route, I guess we might join up with another group for part of the time.
I live in Edinburgh, Scotland and am arriving in Tashkent in the small hours of 22nd August via Aeroflot. I have travelled in many parts of the world, including NZ, but have never been to this part of the world before, although I have been in Nepal and done the conventional highlights of China, so this will be a return to Xian. I believe they have excavated quite a lot more of the terracotta warriers since I was there last.
Getting all the visas has been quite a palaver - Uzbekistan being particularly awkward. Their UK website quotes a price in US dollars, insists on payment in GB cash at their own daily conversion rate, and fails to tell you what this is. Presumably they do not even have an embassy in NZ, so it must be worse for you.
Looking forward to our trip,
Martin

Hi there
Great to hear from someone else. I also have been watching the bookings for the last 12 months and it has always stood at 3 places left and I felt i had to make a quick decision when they said to contact the ooking office. Surprised then to hear there was only 6 of us. Have only done one trip before in Cambodia with 6 and it was great.
I have been living in London for the last 6 mths otherwise it would have been an absolute nightmare getting visas. Went with travelcour and although you pay thru the nose for their service so much better than mucking around picking up passports and sending off again and waiting for deliveries etc.
Have never been to any of these places so quite excited although have done a bit of travelling now. I arrive in Tashkent late arvo on the 21 as I am coming from Bucharest via London and Moscow so about 30 hours non stop - only cos it was the cheapest way. Also the rhubarb Road originally departed from Moscow and I had booked my RTW fare based on that.
Anyway I've dribbled on a lot - guess I'm excited - cant wait to finish work next week and am going to Iceland and Romania before so looking forward to those places as well.
I guess I'll see you in less than a month.
Cheers Debbie

Hi Debbie,
I guess the Rhubarb Road is a good trip if you're heading back to NZ from London. With Iceland and Romania you're certainly getting about.
