Anyone know if the road is or will be open by December 16th 2000, or would it be best to try an book a flight for it? or see if I can arrange it when the tour starts..
Thanks!
Chris!

Please read my response to discussion on Abu Simbel started by "mactheblac" on this board.
Re: Abu Simbel - Road Open ??
Hi Chris,
At this point the road to Abu Simbel is closed. We do recommend you do visit the site as it is an experience you will not forget.
Cheaper flights are available locally but departure cannot be guranteed on the date you require. We suggest you book flights with your agent prior to arrival to avoid missing out.
Enjoy your trip.

What has actually happened to the road?

Re: Abu Simbel - Road Open ??
Hi Chris,
The road to Abu Simbel has been closed since early 1998 so that the government can perform repairs and add security measures.
So far there have been announcements and press releases that the road is open. However, you still cannot travel on the road without special clearance, but we do live in hope.

Re: Abu Simbel - Road Open ??
The road to Abu Simbel is open, and has been for some time, to Egyptians, but not to tourists.
IMHO it's because more money can be made out of flights, than from road trips.
Having said that, I believe that the journey by road takes about 7 hours. A flight is a lot quicker.
An alternative would be to find a tour operator who offers a trip by boat, and take in some other less visited sites on the way - however I suspect you don't have time for this one.
Re: Abu Simbel - Road Open ??
I would recommend you visit Abu Simbel, it is well worth the extra money . As you walk around the corner to face this magnificent Temple for the first time you will be blown away!! It has some of the best art work in Egypt, the detail is amazing!!! I don't think anyone who has ever visited Abu Simbel could forget it in a hurry...
