Hi Chris! Thanks for the rapid response. I just have another quick question. I have heard that it is unacceptable for women to show bare shoulders and knees. What proportion of the tour will I need to wear clothing that covers these areas? Another quick response would be great as I am leaving tomorrow morning!

Hi Laura,

Your Tour Leader will advise you when it will be necessary to cover up. You should work on the basis of having 1 (or more if you can fit it in the space left by the sleeping bag) set of clothes which covers the following areas: Knees, breasts, elbows.

Showing a bit of skin isn't unacceptable in a take you away and string you up sort of sense. It's more that showing these parts of the body can create the wrong impression and lead to unwanted attention in certain circumstances. If you follow your Tour Leaders advice, you can't go far wrong.

I hope that helps. Drop us a line on your return and let us know how you got on. Floating down the Nile on a Felucca...you're making me very jealous.

Re: Accptable Women's Dress

Ok, I'm a 40+ overweight female who's always thought I dressed conservatively. My knees and breasts rarely show, but elbows? Must I leave all T-shirts at home and bring only long sleeve shirts? I'm booked on Pharaohs Tracks in Egypt in Feb.

Hello Maycroft,

Pack your tshirts, I wore them myself whilst in Egypt & bought some there as well. As long as they aren't skin tight, the emphasis is on loose fitting clothing.(more comfortable anyway) Perhaps a longsleeved shirt may be handy if you get sunburnt or a visiting any religious sites.I would also suggest a scarf for dusty areas, so you can wrap it around your head keeping the dust out of eyes & hair. You can buy these very cheaply in Egypt if you would like to wait until you arrive. I too am 40+ alittle overweight, but had a great time in Egypt.

As I understand it, it is mainly the shoulders that are to be covered with no plunging necklines. Knees so should also be covered. No short shorts, if you know what I mean. Of course you will see women wandering around Egypt in very revealing outfits however this generally brings unwanted attention & I certainly wouldn't do it nor would I suggest anyone else do so. By the way men shouldn't wander about without a shirt on or with short shorts, Egyptian men are just as covered as the women.

Maycroft are you an Aussie too?, I have seen your name here. Have a great time, wish I could join you.
