August in Egypt

Hi All,

I have just booked to go on the Jewel of Egypt tour on the 10th of August however I'm concerned about the weather. I know it will be in the 40C but I am not particularly bothered by that coming from Central Australia. My concern is the type of weather, is it a dry bearable heat or slightly humid? This may seem like a silly question but I just wanted to make sure. I'm so excited about the trip as well... [Smile]

Re: August in Egypt

Hello K8T_C,

On the whole Egypt is a dry climate. You will however experience some humidity when in Cairo & also perhaps when you are in Alexandria. (this part is only a guess as I have never been in Alex at that time of year.

It will get hotter & drier the further south you go, so Aswan will be much hotter & drier than Alex will be.

Your tour will be structured to beat the heat as much as possible, so don't worry too much. Just remember to drink water OFTEN. The best way of making certain you are taking in enough fluids is to watch your output. If it's yellow or yellowish...or worst still dark, then you're not taking in enough fluids. Bottled water is cheap to buy, especially off the street vendors, just check that the seals are intact.

Hope you have a wonderful time. Im hoping I might stick it lucky & be able to travel back in April, if not it will be May next year.

Hope all this helps...............Debbie

Re: August in Egypt

Thanks Debbie. That was really informative. I'm really looking forward to the trip as I have always had a fascination with Egypt.

I'll be turning up in Cairo a couple of days before the tour starts. Will it be easy to get from the Salma hotel to the Egyptian Museum and back? I'm not a very good haggler either [Frown]

Re: August in Egypt

Hello K8T_C,

The easiest way if you are feeling uncertain (& you will be for the first day or 2)is to book the taxi through the front desk of the Salma. The staff will book a taxi, just get them to sort out the price before you set off. The driver will deliver you where ever you want to go & will sit & wait while you wander about. He will then take you safely back to the Hotel. You pay upon your return to the Hotel.

It's a good idea to take one of the maps from the Salma & ask them to write the address & phone number in Arabic on the back, just incase anything goes wrong!!

Remember to pack your sense of humour & an open heart & mind!! Have a great time...........Debbie

PS, I enjoyed this tour SO much back in Dec '03/Jan'04....hope you do too!

Re: August in Egypt

Thank you so so much Debbie.. Your a wonderful help. I'm really looking forward to it all, I'm so excited I just wish I was going yesterday...

This is the first time I'll be travelling with imaginative but I have already talked my sister into trying out one of their tours in Asia as well. I'm so happy that there is finally a tour group out there that put back into the countries they visit. The imaginative projects just sound wonderful. Anyway I'm waffling. Thank you once more and happy travels!

Re: August in Egypt

K8T_C if you're from Central Oz, I think you'll be fine...

Like Debbie said Southern Egyptian is much more drier than the northern cities and from memory JOE spends most of the time South/East Egypt (2 or 3 days in Cairo & Alex) So I don't think you will find it much different from home - Hot but not humid.

I'd much prefer to be in Egypt's heat than Brisbane's humidity - but to tell you the truth I'd just love to be in Egypt in general!!

Re: August in Egypt

That's good to know about the dry heat. I'm from Brissie as well and HATE the humidity.

Debbie, you are just a wealth of info, thanks so much for all the replies. Even though I haven't asked the questions, I'm always reading what you've written and picking up something else I need to know.
