I was just wondering how much we will be lugging our luggage around? Is a dufflebag ok or is it better to bring a pack? Also, is it necessary to bring a long skirt? I didn't know if there would be places where knees must be covered or if pants would not be suitable for a woman. I'm leaving in 5 days and am just trying to get everything together. I've never been to Egypt before and am really beginning to get EXTREMELY excited!!

Re: bag or pack?

Hi
I would recommend a backpack as you will have to carry your own luggage and it is surely more comfortable than a bag. Not to mention better for your back!!
The info i have is definatly a long skirt or pants as Egyption men will harrass you if you show skin. Loose cotton t shirts are recommended, and loose pants/skirts. If you have blonde hair it is wise to wear a scarf. The lonely planet guide has fantastic info and good for things to do on your free time.
Have fun

Re: bag or pack?

Hi Hobo,

Just to reiterate on what Sharon has mentioned.

For ease of use, the best type of bag to bring is a frameless rucksack or a sports bag, preferably with some sort of shoulder strap. This type of bag tends to be less bulky and easier to handle than rigid suitcases or framed rucksacks.

As for clothes, it is best to stay fairly well covered up when amongst the locals and in public places. Shorts that come below the knees, long skirts and tops that do not have a low neckline or show too much upper arm are best to take along.

Your tour leader will advise on what is best to wear when visiting certain places like religious sites etc..

Please refer to your pre-departure booklet for more information on clothes and other things to take with you.

Have a great trip!! :-)

Re: bag or pack?

Long skirts and pants are a definite must, especially down in Aswan and Luxor. Though that did not stop us from being harassed a bit. I've heard people who've had no problems, but on our tour both myself and another female on our tour were grabbed. The other girl was actually grabbed twice, both times in Cairo. I was unlucky in the market in Aswan. We were advised to cover up in Aswan, especially in the marketplace, it's just better safe than sorry. We never had to cover our heads though.
You'll probably have no problems, but cover up to be safe.
Have fun, I wish I was still there, it's an amazing country.
