Buying luggage for our trip...

Hi All!
I did a forum search within the Egypt group for "luggage" but most of the posts were over a year old, so I thought I'd post my own.

My boyfriend and I are signed up for the Beyond the Pyramids tour leaving on September 27th. Right now, between the two of us, we own 1 soft bag that has wheels. We were thinking of buying large duffle bags instead (1 each), like hockey bags...fairly large. We'd be able to carry our own bags no problem. We're just wondering what the actual size restrictions are for the bags, because I think the luggage is carried by camels for a bit and I don't want the bags to be a problem.

If hockey bags are a problem, what do you suggest we buy? We probably won't bring the soft bag that has wheels because it's fairly old...so we're going to buy whatever is best for this trip.

Also, is anyone else signed up for this trip yet?

Travel Light.

I'm one of those recent converts to the travel light movement so I'm probably a little too evangelical:

My opinion is that if you're taking too much for a backpack, you're taking too much.

I took a carry on-sized rolling bag and a 20L backpack and they both were carried on board the plane. For my 3 weeks on the Jewels of Egypt + London that was all I needed to get through it all.

Looking at the itinerary of your trip, it is going to be a whole lot easier if you pack light, especially with all that train and felucca time.

Re: Buying luggage for our trip...

Hey Kozy,

Make sure you check the weight limits with your airline carrier first (great advise Baldock Babe.

The bag that babylon has described is great or a standard back pack. Just make sure that you can cope with your luggage as you will have to be able to stow it away on the seater train and carry it around the train stations.

I hope that this helps!

Re: Buying luggage for our trip...

I went on the Sailtrek and Sinai trip and we all took backpacks. I think they are by far the most practical bag for any of these type of trips I have done (S.E Asia, Africa etc). If you are continuously on the move they make life so much easier for you.

Why would you have too much for a backpack? You will still have the airline weight limit to contend with no matter what bag you take.

Then again, I usually carry around 10kg of stuff even when travelling for 5 weeks or so! I gather I am a light packer (but rarely forget anything*!).

*Fingers crossed!

I used a large duffle bag when I was in Egypt and had no problems

Re: Buying luggage for our trip...

I think we'd have too much for a backpack, but it would be nice to be able to squish everything into one. I'm just wondering if there is a length/width limit of any kind when bringing a bag. It's a pretty stupid question I guess hahaha

Re: Buying luggage for our trip...

Hi....I travel with a back pack, 22 lbs total weight. It has wheels so I can roll along when possible & then carry when necessary. I use a another soft fabric back pack as my day pack. That is the one that has my water, travel book etc. I travel very light. I toss my clothing instead of washing. Returning home I have lots of room for my purchases. Eh Canada...some people may not know what a hockey bag is !!!
