Hello,
Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to go from Cairo to Alexandria and back in a day and if so how I would go about booking this.
I am going on the Nile Rover on Feb 8. It looks great, but I've noticed it doesn't include Alexandria and I also really want to go there. I read on another website that you can do it by train and it takes about 2 hours each way - is this true? Would it be better to take the train or bus?

Yes, it's very possible to do a day trip to Alexandria in one day. We did this last week. We bought 1st-class return tickets from Ramses station for 52 Egyptian pounds. The jouney takes about two and a half hours. (Most people get off the train at Sidi Gaber, which is in Alexandria's suburbs. Stay on the train until Masr Station!)
There aren't many ancient monuments in Alexandria. (The Roman theatre isn't very impressive if you've spent the rest of your holiday in the shadow of Egyptian monuments.) Do visit the new library, and do get lost in the markets. We enjoyed Alexandria greatly - a gutsy, less touristy contrast to other parts of Egypt.

i was in egypt june/july 2001...we took a taxi from a hotel and just bargened for a good price...for 200 eg pounds, the driver took us to and from alex, waited in the car while we ate lunch, took us to all the sites we wanted to see, and still just waited in his car...
