Anyone else staying behind at the Salma
Hotel, after the Kingdoms of the Nile Tour?

My Flight dosen't leave until the 25th.

So I will have a weekend after the tour to fill in, (Well I guess there is always SLEEP)

But I shouldn't have any problems finding things to do alone?? is it safe? or should I just bring another book?

Thanks!

Chris!

Hi Chris,

Just a few suggestions for what you can do with your extra time in Egypt.

We recommend a day trip or overnight stay in Alexandria. The train costs $20.00(1st class)one way, once there taxis are easy find.
Must see attractions include; The Greco Roman Museum, Pompeii's Pillar and the largest catacombs outside of Rome. Alexandria also boasts the site of the eighth wonder of the world the Ancient Lighthouse.
As well as all of this Alexandria has fantastic seafood at amazing prices.

We can also suggest a horse/camel trip between Giza and Saqqara (cost: $15-20), which will be particularly spectacular around sunset.

You should have no worries about safety but you can always talk to your tour leader who will be more than happy to advise you.

We did the Alexandria trip after our NRS tour, and stayed for 2 nights.
It was worth it as it's a very different city to Cairo.

We also had a couple of extra nights in the Salma. We spent the best part of one day re-visiting the Egyptian museum unguided, as the short guided tour doesn't really do it justice.
Saw many interesting and amazing artifacts that we'd completely missed, not spotted, or rushed past on the first visit.
We also loaded a fast film in our camera the second time, so the pictures were a lot better.

PS.
No need to bring another book.
We found a really good English Language Bookshop (the name escapes me), with a large selection, just around the corner from the Salma.

Chris

Here's what you can do with your extra time in Cairo, besides Alex:

1) Egyptian Museum - half to one day
2) Coptic Cairo - cab ride to Midan Tahrir (LE5), then short metro ride to Mar Girgis (SP?) just outside Coptic Cairo (half day)
3) Al Azhar Mosque - near Khan el Khalili - two to three hours
4) Khan-el-Khalili - two to four hours, depending on your tolerance of crowds!

Edwin's idea with the fast film is a good one. Unfortunately the idea came of me at the end of my tour. Worked well at the Valleys of the kings and Queens. I only had luck with 1600 speed film - 800 speed film did not work well for me - fast film is hard to find in Egypt - take some from home. Have fun!

I am taking my video camera, and my little kodak 35mm, with around 4 rolls of 800
and 2 rolls of 400 and 6 of 200 speed film

I probably will not use my video camera too much, due to the charges.. only have 4-5 hours of video... But I will probably use it a bit in the States before I arrive & Singapore.....

(I am not good with a camera)

I may see if I can get some more 800 speed film before I go....

Thanks

Chris
