Hi All,
This topic has been discussed and I don't mean to belabour the issue, but what is the best way to see these three historical sites? From the forum, I have read that Im Trav can arrange a tour guide to travel to all 3 sites and I have also read that individuals prearranged this tour with an independant tour guide. Can someone please explain what the best options are and who I should contact to visit those sites?
I am traveling on the Jordan and Egypt Adventure tour this coming Sunday Nov 9 and I believe we will have quite a lot of free time the very last day of the tour (ending in Cairo). Im Trav: How much time do you estimate we will have in Cairo after we leave from Luxor? Will I have enough time to visit Saqqara, Dahshur, and Meidum? THANKS!

How to see Saqqara, Dahshur & Meidum???
Hello F1Ferrari,
You can visit these 3 sites a number of ways.
You can ask your Tour Leader to organise a driver/car etc for you.
You can arrange with your Tour Leader to organise a taxi to take you to the 3 sites. The price will be agreed on before you leave, the driver will wait at each site for you & will deliver you back to your Hotel. You only pay when you arrive back at your Hotel.
Some of the Hotels are able to arrange the same deal.
So you have a few options!
I'm not sure if you wanted a guided tour of each of the sites or whether you just wanted to be taken to the sites!
Hope this helps, you have chosen 3 of my favourites places...can I also suggest that you might like to include Memphis on your list, it's easy to fit in along the way. Just a thought!!
I have just read your tour itinerary, you will arrive back in Cairo on the train in the morning & will have the rest of that day to do what ever you wish & going by your itinerary, your tour does not end until after breakfast the following day.
All the best & have a wonderful time, you KNOW I want to be there alongside you!!............Debbie

Thanks Debbie!
Thanks for your reply Debbie - very helpful!
Best Regards

Awesome! Thanks Debbie!
It would def. be nice to have a guided tour, as I would not know too much about the buildings/funerary complexes around each site (although there are not too many around both Sneferu's pyramids, however at places like Saqqara there is more than just Djoser's Step Pyramid, so a guided tour might be nice). If I wanted a guided tour, who would be able to accompany me? Would it be run through ImTrav or are these types of tours generally run by independant companies? If ImTrav does not run there own tour, can the tour guide recommend some and set it up for me while on tour? And finally, I would love to crawl into the Red Pyramid...do all tour operators allow this, or is this something Egypt opens and closes, or is it always open and "adventurers beware" kind of thing?
Thank you for the recommendation of Memphis. What is your opinion regarding Memphis? I know the historical significance as it was the Old Kingdom's capital, however I have read in various travel guides and historical books that the old capital ruins are buried under vegetation like trees etc. Apparently there is not too much to see. What are your thoughts?
LoL...sorry for all the questions! I guess I didn't realize that these sites are not covered (with my hectic lifestyle, you can really tell I was looking deep into this several months prior!)
Thanks so much for all your help and I look forward to your reponses. I can't believe I have only 2 days left until my flight!!!!!
You are very welcome!!
If you want a guided tour then I feel the best way would be to organise with your Tour Leader, however this will be the most expensive avenue. BUT Im Trav will supply the vehicle (more than probably air conditioned), driver & guide. So the dearer option does have it's good side!! I have actually done this myself in the past, through Im Trav!
It may be possible to organise the same option through the Hotels, but I am not certain of this. I know it's easy to organise a driver etc, but have no idea when it comes to a guide.
In all the years I have been travelling to Egypt (almost 10 years now), the Red Pyramid has always been open to the public. I love going out there, as there are NO vendors.........YAY!! And it's so quiet out there in the desert, the same goes for Meidum......in some ways nicer than Giza, just for the sheer bliss of peace! You just need to purchase your entry ticket when you arrive out there, so it's easy to do. I have gone into the interior of the Red Pyramid in the past, there really isn't a lot to see, but it is still interesting. Wonderful to stand there & gaze up at the amazing ceiling! If you're not so good in confined areas.....like me, then just take it easy. If I can do it anyone can!! Make sure you take a torch in case the lights go out!
Memphis. Memphis is a place everyone should visit, even just once. It has an open air Museum, which if you are not up to date with your Egyptology, may not be of interest. In fact I myself was guilty of this! I know more now though! However, to stand & gaze upon the enormous statue of Ramses that has been left lying in the position it was found, is truly awesome. It is in beautiful condition & the thought...."how did they manage to produce this", springs to mind in an instant! I know when I next return to Egypt, that I will be back out there reshooting pics I have taken in the past & I will also spend more time with exhibits that I so rudely glanced over in the past. If you don't feel the need to see another statue of Ramses, then I wouldn't worry.
When you go to Saqqara, they now have the new Museum open out there too. I visited this Museum in March 2007. I have to say that I was not terribly interested BUT I was out there purely to reshoot pics, not to visit Museums. While in the Saqqara area, there is also a number of other places of interest nearby. Such as the Serapeum & the Mastaba of Ti etc. Grab yourself a Lonely Planet book & have a good read!! I'm not certain if the Serapeum is open to the public anymore, so you would need to check!
I so wish I were able to hop on a plane & fly over there right now, but the drought won't let it's hold on us go, we're now heading into year 12! So I have to just keep dreaming & helping you guys out to get my Egypt fix. Have a wonderful time & please have a lemon juice & a mint tea for me!!!
If I can help in any other way please let me know! By the way, where are you from?? I'm located in Central Victoria, Australia.
All the best...........Debbie
