I've been wondering about dressing for the Jewels of Egypt, 10/28 departure, which won't make it to Sinai until mid-November. The coldest element is at the end. I'm wondering what is the best kind of jacket to bring--something that wouldn't be a pain to carry around for 2 weeks in warm weather but still warm enough for the possible climb of Sinai (I'm not sure we'll do it, but want to try). I have bought an inexpensive polar fleece jacket which is light but takes up a fair amount of room to pack. Advice from those in the know would be appreciated. Thanks. [We will be going to Jordan on our own afterward, where whatever jackets we bring will probably get more use than they do in Egypt].

Re: A jacket for Sinai
Hello Warren,
I would pack a warm windproof jacket, as it can be very cold on top of Mt Sinai. Even if you wear your jackets onto the plane when you leave home & then take them off during your flight. At least then they're not taking up luggage space!! I would also include one or two polar fleece jumpers (pullovers?) as Egypt can get quite cold in November.
Not certain if this is useful or not!! All the best............Debbie
Re: A jacket for Sinai
It's useful. I won't mind carrying the jacket along so much if I actually will be able to use it at other times during the trip. I was thinking it would be too hot. But I guess I will have it for the nights. We may not go on the Sinai climb--that depends on the tour operator's recommendation and what we feel up to at that point.
Re: A jacket for Sinai
Hello Warren,
If you dont feel up to the entire climb, you can always book a camel!! I kid you not!! The camel will take you most of the way up & then you only have to manage the last few hundred steps.
So this may be another option for you. I know that there is no way I will ever be able to manage the climb again, after knee surgery!
All the best........Debbie
PS, as Im not an employee of ImTrav, you had better check that this is still available!

Re: A jacket for Sinai
Hi Warren,
I did the Jewels of Egypt last year & found that when we got to Sinai that layering was your best bet. We were also able to rent a blanket once we got to the top which was a real life-saver. It only cost us about 15 egyptian. Don't forget to bring mittens/woolen cap as you'll need them.
Re: A jacket for Sinai
I sure am going to do it the chickens way and hire a camel or donkey, I'm not a big hicker and up hill is not my friend.
cheers.
Re: A jacket for Sinai
Hi there![[Smile]](smile.gif)
I wore almost everything I had with me when I climbed (read rode a camel). Once I cooled down I was cold...really cold. Mind you I did it in January and a few days before it had snowed, but my fleece wasn't cutting it - at all.
I found Jordan MUCH colder - I was there for what they call the 40 days of cold. My tour did not require a sleeping bag, but those who were doing a different tour had one and used it a lot in Jordan. If you don't want to lug a sleeping bag, I highly recommend taking a therman sleeping sheet - takes up practically no room and is good for adding 8C. I just took one with me for a recent tour and while people were complaining about too hot or too cold - I was just right
Re: A jacket for Sinai
Thanks for all the advice.
If we do it at all, a camel will be involved. However, having ridden a camel for 3 hours before and then tried it for 3 hours the next day, we might walk down.
