My brother (a WWII buff) has suggested that I try to get to El Alamein when I am in Alexandria.
It doesn't seem that there would be a whole lot of time though. On day 2, around what time would we arrive at Alexandria? Since El-Alamein is about 110km from Alexandria, how long would that take on Egyptian roads?
Thanks!!!

Re: Jewels of Egypt - Alexandria
I had initally thought the same thing Fuzzy as I believe one of my mothers cousins is buried there. I'll be interested in seeing the responses. Time looks limited while in Alexandria though so I didn't think it would be possible.

Hi,
I honestly don't think you will have time to go there, unless you skip the Museum etc.
When I did the JOE in 2006 we arrived in Alex on sunset (never forget that, due to it being ramadan).
And headed to the museum, catacombs, pompey's pillar as early as we could so we could get back to Cairo in time for the train... From memory, I think it's about a 3-4 hour drive between Cairo & Alex
And the "sleeper train" departed Cairo at about 8pm.
Hope this helps
Re: Jewels of Egypt - Alexandria
Hello
Apologies for the late reply. I have just received the details regarding the arrival time into Alexandria.
Unfortunately, the average scheduled time which the group will arrive into Alexandria on day 2 is 18:30-19:00. This obviously would not allow enough time to safely make it to El-Alamein in anything close to daylight hours.
Sorry for any disappointment.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Ah well, it just means we have have to go back again! Any excuse for another trip!
Re: Jewels of Egypt - Alexandria
If you do the Siwa Oasis tour (longer but includes Alex) you will go to El Alamein (it was incredible) and also to Mersa Matrouh (spelling).
We visited the cemetary on the way out, the museum on the way back, then the nazi bunker at Mersa on the way back also.
Add to this the fact that Siwa is fantastic and is the only place you can see a real mummy NOT behind glass, PLUS bicycle all over the country side in safety - well - do you need more reasons?
This was my favourite tour I have done in Egypt - I have done 3.
