Hi, just wondering if anyone knows how difficult the Mt.Sinai climb is. And what kind of shoes are best. I have a pair of good keen sandals but don't really want to take my hiking shoes for one day. Thanks.

Mt. Sinai Options
Dear Laura,
Please see Options if not climbing Mt. Sinai.
This climb is NOT a gentle walk in the park. The terrain is rough, rocky, climbing over large boulders and not for the faint of heart as you do it in the dark using head lamps or flashlights!
Mind you if you have $$$ you can pay for a camel to carry you up almost to the top and then climb the rest of the way. The view from the top is magnificant I've been told.
I struggled to the 1st tea stop and stayed there with two other people who also could go no further -- bad knees --until the time the sun came up and the rest of our group came down the mountain. The Bedouins kindly provided us with tea and then went to sleep awaiting the folks on their way down.
Good strong hiking boots are in order. Flip-flops and sneakers are out of the question and you need lots of water as once the sun comes up it is very hot and the climb up is cold so you need to layer your clothing. Take a daypack or have long sleeve jackets to tie around your waist.
Hope this helps!

thanks, just wasn't sure what to take.
Mt.Sinai climb
I did this climb 2 years ago. I took a camel up the mountain, it cost 65 egyptian pounds. Several other people in the group wore keen or tevia sandles, running shoes or the tour guide wore flip flops and they walked up with no problems. No one brought hiking boots. There is a pathway, it is steep in some places and quite rocky. I walked down from the top and I wore running shoes and had no problems.

I also just wore regular New Balance walking shoes and didn't have a problem with it
SHOES
The secret is the "tread" on your footwear - sneakers with a good tread will do the trick but so many people do not have a good heavy tread and end up slipping down the mountain. I have even seen a tour guide do the slip -- not pretty.
As to flip flops again there are the beach kind with no tread and then the hiking kind. If you do any kind of rock climbing you will know what I mean.

I hope my above comments help.

Hey Guys,
I would avoid wearing flip flops, something that supports your foot and also offers some grip is ideal. As Maureen mentioned there are hiking sandles available (think Morrell).
I hope that this helps.
