Hello there,
I am considering going on the Nile Safari this summer and taking my Mum with me as she is a mad Egyptologist.
Can anyone please tell me if it is a suitable trip for someone a bit older. She is very fit and loves roughing it(probably more than me!) but she is 66. I don't want to book it and then find out that it will be too strenuous for her.

Any help please?
May thanks
Emma.

Re: Nile Safari - suitability

Hi Emma,

I've been a happy traveller with the Nile Safari myself. Had a great time & the tour was very interesting. The only section that is strenuous is the donkey ride to the Valley of Kings. When you are heading back, the tour walks/climbs a rather steep incline BUT the view is worth it!! Our group had a couple from South Africa who were in their late 60's early 70's....they had a ball!!

If you can afford to include Abu Simbel....GO it is fabulous! The art work in this wonderful Temple is probably the best in Egypt, the detail & quality is excellent.
You will be blown away when you walk around the corner to face this Temple for the first time.....I certainly was anyway.

You will be able to laze away on Amy drinking ice cold coke & eating lovely ice creams. The food onboard is excellent, the cook makes the best carrot soup I've ever eaten. The showers are also very good. I understand Amy has been refurbished since my tour 2 years ago.

I hope this helps. Enjoy your holiday...wish I could be there too!!

Re: Nile Safari - suitability

Hi Emma,

Most of our clients are aged between 18-50 but we welcome having older travellers on board with us.

We do state that everybody is expected to be able to complete the itinerary and that in some cases older travellers may be asked to provide medical evidence of their fitness to travel on certain tours. If your Mum is in any doubt she should contact her GP before departure.

However, your Mum does sound very active and probably fitter than most of the younger people on the tour but like I said, see the doctor if there are any question marks.

I hope you enjoy the tour, I only wish I was going with you.

Re: Nile Safari - suitability

Hi, I was on the Nile Safari this past November. As Debbie said, the most difficult part was the donkey ride, of which I did not go on as well as a few other ladies, but we arranged to have a taxi take us to the Valley of the Kings. There are a lot of early mornings, but the tour itself was very good. On the tour we took, there was a couple that were 78 years old, and they had more energy than my husband and I and we are half their age!! Amy was definately the highlight, it was very relaxing and the scenery was just beautiful. Kids come running down the banks of the Nile waving and sreaming. It made great videos. I found also that we had quite abit of free time, in Aswan we had just about 2 days to basically do what we wanted.
My husband & I took a ferry to Elephantine Island and walked through a Nubian Village, then hired a Felucca for about 3 hours for about $12.00 Canadian. It was really enjoyable. As well, the bazaar at Aswan is really good. If your mom is into Egypt, then she will definately enjoy this tour as some of the local Egyptologists really get into detail about many things, and having a knowledgeable background would really make it interesting. Some of the accomodations are quite basic, so don't expect the Hilton.
The overnight train was alot of fun, the beds were actually quite comfortable. It is however very rocky on the way back from Aswan to Cairo, so if you suffer from motion sickness, I suggest to take something for nausea. Well, I hope this helped you. Egypt is a country you can love one minute, then hate the next. We have travelled quite alot in the last 10 years, and this was probably one of the tours that we have talked about the most after we returned home. It was a great experience and we met alot of great people along the way!! Enjoy.....
