Chris
Yes you can send postcards home in English.
Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
I did the Sailtrek tour and sent three cards home, none of which got top where I intended themn to go! So while I understand Ravi may have been successful I was not!. I addressed them in English and none got to there destination, I would advise everyone to follow the Lonley Planets advice and send them in a envelope.
Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
I did the NRS tour and sent about 18 cards to England, Scotland and one to Australia.
All of the cards to England and Scotland have been delivered OK, within 2 weeks of posting them. Don't know about the Australian one yet.
They were all addressed in English.
Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
I sent over 20 postcards from a vast area in Egypt. All but 2 made it to their destinations ( all in Australia). All were addressed in English.
I hope this helps you , have a great time!!

Hi Chris,
Wish I were going to. Enjoy your time in Egypt. You will be in good hands, so just relax & soak up the History & beauty of this wonderful country. If you are thinking of swimming in the Nile take the plunge at Aswan where the water is crystal clear.
Would love to hear about your travels when you return...........so I can dream on........sigh.
Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
The Medical person I went to see here last
week for my jab's (Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria & Typhoid) advised me not to go swimming or do anything in the nile because of some nasty little worm, that is ment to be in all the fresh water thoughout africa., is ment to just go straight thought the skin... and effects the liver etc etc....
is ment to be fatal if un-treated..
Anyway has kinda scared me a bit about
swimming!

Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
Hi Chris,
Yes there is a worm, called beilhatsia (may not be the correct spelling) BUT it is only present in shallow warm water such as irragation ditches & puddles. These waters should not be paddled in. It doesn't survive in cold deep water & believe me the Nile is deep. As I understand it ,you can purchase medication to kill these worms if you think you may have been in contact with them. Your Tour Leader should be able to help you with this.
My best pick would be at Aswan , where the water is at it's most pure & so very beautiful.
Don't panic .....all will be well. Have a glass of lemon juice for me & a cup of mint tea....yum.

Re: Postcards - Postal System in Egypt in Arabic?
Hi Chris
The nasty little worm you were told about goes by the name of Bilharzia. It lives in warm stagnant water in irrigation channels along the Nile and can enter your system through the foot before attacking the liver. It has been a problem for local farmers standing for long periods of time in irrigation canals while working their land and obviously women doing their washing in irrigation canals who come into contact with warm stagnant water whilst barefoot. The Egyptian media has made great strides in educating people about the health risks (telling people to wear shoes or to avoid places where the worm would thrive.).
The health problems caused by Bilharzia are now curable in 3 stages, but to be honest it's not somthing you should be worried about. The worm in question finds it incredibly difficult to survive in cold, fast flowing water (e.g. the Nile).
Your tour leader will always advise you about the risks Bilharzia and any other aspects of swimming in the Nile.
Enjoy the trip.
