Hello,
Where is the best place for purchasing souvenirs - Cairo, Luxor or towns in the the Western Desert? I'm thinking of souvenirs such as clothing, papyrus (I've been told to get it at the Papyrus Institute in Cairo), jewelry and spices - souvenirs that are small and / or not fragile.
Thanks.
Steph

Re: Shopping for souvenirs
Hi There,
If you want to buy papyrus, you should definitely get them at the Papyrus Institute which is in Cairo. It is a little more expensive at the Institute, but they are genuine papyrus.
The papyrus at the markets are more cheaper, but they are mostly all fakes.
As for jewelery and clothes, the markets in Cairo and Luxor, etc pretty much sell the same stuff. So it should be ok to get them anywhere.
If you are looking for bellydance costumes, it is better to get them at the special bellydance costume and haberdashery shops at the Khan el Khalili market in Cairo. The materials and costumes are of far superior quality.
The bellydance costumes you find in the general market stalls in Cairo and Luxor, etc are of poor quality and good for souvenir purposes.
Hope you have fun in Egypt!![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Re: Shopping for souvenirs
Thanks for the useful information. I had not thought of belly dancing costumes. They would make a fun souvenir:-)
Re: Shopping for souvenirs
Hey,
If thinking of buying bellydance costumes as souvenirs, just go for the cheaper ones that are available in all the markets everywhere around Egypt. You can get them for at least 20 Egyptian Pounds and usually consist of a top and skirt.
