Hey,
I was looking at how cheap things are for students. I read on previous posts that its called ISIC,can i get one on arrival in egypt? Im currently not studying, but i have a valid uni student card. Can i still get one?

Also, ive had mixed comments about travellers cheques. i was thinking of taking cash for local payment and tipping kitty and for the first couple of days and then using ATM's for the rest of the time. good, bad?

Re: Student Cards.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your question.

I don't think it will be possible for you to pick up an ISIC card on arrival into Egypt. These are normally purchased through one of the ISIC card's partners, such as STA.

I have to admit that I am also not sure where you can go in Australia to arrange an ISIC card for yourself. Their website is http://www.isiccard.com/ and I don't know if it's only a British thing or if students all over the World carry them. It wasn't clear on their website. Do a bit of homework on Google.com.au and see what you can find out. You can always check with your nearest STA too (if there's one near to you) and they should know which student cards are available to you in Australia.

At many of the attractions in Egypt you will receive a discount on production of a valid student card and this does not necessarily need to be an ISIC card (although this will be the one the egyptians are most familiar with).

Personally, I do not use travellers cheques but they do have their uses and are the safest way to carry money overseas. Your plan to take enough for the first few days and then use ATMs sounds fine though. This is what I did on my own two-week tour of Egypt and there are ATMs in all major towns and cities, including Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada, Aswan and Dahab. You might like to take a bit of cash in your own currency as a contingency but otherwise you'll be able to draw out what you need from ATMs. Your tour leader will be able to advise how much you are likely to need on any given day on your tour.

I hope this helps.

Re: Student Cards.

Thanks Brendan,

I have looked on the website ( www.isic.org ) and i can get it from the STA here, but because im not enrolled at the current time, im not able to get one. But the site says the youth card gives the same discounts in Egypt so i will get it, and if it doesnt work, ill just keep falshing cards till one does [Wink] .

Thanks again.

Re: Student Cards.

Hello Aaron,

If you have a current uni card to the end of this year, you should be able to get a student card on arrival in Egypt. I did when I travelled to Egypt in 2003. You will need your card & a passport photo. With the student card you can save heaps when visiting the sites, a svaing of around 50%.

In the past I have taken travellers cheques to Egypt. On this trip though I have takem US $$ & have had no problems exchanging them for Egyptian pounds. Haven't used my ATM card yet on this trip though, but have on past trips with no problems.

Hope this helps & that you enjoy your trip. I am having a wonderful time [Big Grin]

All the best...........Debbie

Re: Student Cards.

Hi Aaron,

It sounds like a plan! I'm sure you'll be able to get some kind of discount if you have a valid student card and thanks Debbie for letting us know that you can get a card on arrival - I wasn't aware of that. I've actually had an ISIC card in the past myself and it definitley helped out in a few East-European cities.

Let me know if you find anything else out about the subject!

Re: Student Cards.

I have found the place in the lonley planet guide, Egypt Student Travel Services handle the ISIC cards in egypt, www.estsegypt.com, (i should really read this book before i ask [Roll Eyes] ), but i arrive on a Saturday, and they state no opening times. So i might play it safe and see if STA will give me a student card before i go.

Thanks Debbie and Brendan.
