I'm off to Egypt in February and have just received some notepads, pencils and sharpeners from a school in my hometown for the orphanage in Luxor. Are these materials ok to give to the orphanage? Does anyone know if taking sharpeners in my check-in luggage on the plane could be an issue?
Thanks :-)

Hello Sammi,
I always take pens, pencils, excercise books etc to the Sunshine project whenever I visit Egypt. I haven't ever taken sharpeners though. However, if they are just the type that you fit the pencil into & then turn the pencil/sharpener, I doubt it will be a problem in your check in luggage. If they are a blade type sharpener, it may pose a problem, but I'm not certain either.
The Sunshine project is a very worthwhile cause. The children are very well cared for & always seem very happy. The staff make any visitor's feel welcome & the children seem to enjoy the visits from outsiders!
Hoping that you get to enjoy your visit there as much as I have in the past.
Kindest regards.......Debbie

Sunshine Project in Luxor, and new project - the Nursery School!
Hello Sammi1327 and Debbie
Thank you for posting on the forums, and for being so generous as to offer to take gifts over to Egypt.
I also visited the Sunshine Project several years ago and found it to be a really lovely positive place run by very dedicated people.
The Sunshine Project is doing very well these days, and has a lot of support out there from other companies and organisations. In fact, they are doing so well that we have been looking around in the area for a new project to support who has a greater need, and where our contributions will make even more of a difference.
There will be more information uploaded onto our website in the next few weeks, however you will be among the first to know that we are now supporting a new project in Luxor -the Nursery School on the West Bank.
Hamida is from the West bank in Luxor. Unlike many of the women living there she has been fortunate enough to travel outside of Luxor living in Cairo for a time and also visiting England.
She wants to give something back to the area where she was raised and so has started a nursery school, this despite some opposition from her family.
The nursery has been opened in a flat where up to 65 children are taught basic school subjects such as Arabic, English and maths. Hamida has managed to equip the classrooms with basic facilities but the nursery is still desperate for everything from pens and paper, educational games and books to more furniture. In the future they also hope to have their own school bus, as many of the children live far away from the school.
You will be offered the chance to visit Hamida and the children on any of our Egypt trips that pass through Luxor. You can donate money through our responsible travel fund or you can take gifts with you when you visit.
The items that you mentioned, Sammi, would be fine and would be very much appreciated at the nursery.
Thanks again and best wishes for your travels,
Regards
Kelly
Thanks Debbie and Kelly,
It's great to hear about the new project, and to know the things our local school have donated will be suitable. I've also managed to grab a few English alphabet, counting and story books - the back to school sales in Australia are an excellent time to get these things, and I hope to get a bit more stuff before I go!
These projects are yet another reason why ImTrav is the best tour company around. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to contribute to the society we're visiting.
Cheers,
Sammi
Thank you Sammi!
Hi again Sammi,
That is really very kind of you - thank you so much!
I am sure your local school will be very happy to know their gifts will be so much appreciated.
Thank you again for your kind thoughts and the gifts for the nursery school.
Also, re-reading your first post, you will probably not be allowed sharpeners on the plane so would recommend packing them in your check-in luggage.
Best wishes,
Kelly
Hello Sammi,
I truly wish I were able to tag along with you! Where are you located in OZ? I'm in Central Vic.
I agree very much with Kelly.....any assistance to the Sunshine Project is very much appreciated & I'm sure the new project will be just as happy to receive our donations!
Wishing you lots of fun with your travel plans, it's almost as much fun as the travel it self!!
Kindest regards.........Debbie
Mafesh Mushkelah!!!
Hi Debbie,
I'm on the Vic/NSW border near Wodonga. I had a wonderful time at the Officeworks back-to-school sale and have a nice little pack of stationery to take with me.
Just three weeks to go now - I'm very excited!
Hello Sammi,
Well I guess we're not all that far from each other given the size of this country! I'm near Bendigo, so really not all that far away, not like Perth or Darwin etc!!
I truly hope that you have a wonderful holiday. My first trip to Egypt in March 1999 was life changing. I can never get enough of Egypt!
Not long to go now, I bet you're well & truly into count down mode!! All packed?
Take care & I hope to hear about your trip & see lot's of pics.
All the best.........Debbie
