Hello,
We are considering taking the train up to Alexandria for a day either before departing on Egypt & Jordan Caravan tour, or on one of our free days in Cairo in the middle of the tour. Has anyone else done this and was it fairly simple/difficult to do on your own?
Thanks!

Re: train to Alexandria
Hi Calvin,
I did this trip in January this year and it was easy. Went to the main station called Ramses station in Cairo and booked a first class seat return for less than 100 egyptian pounds per person if memory serves me. It was a great trip short, about 2.5 hrs had trolly service on board and air conditioned, but we did not need it in January we needed blankets! On arrival grab a cab and see the catacombs as this was the highlight for us. A taxi we negoiated cost us 150 for the whole day. And take a walk along the corniche (spelling?) its great. Avoid Pompeys Pillar as its a total waste of time and money.
Enjoy.

Re: train to Alexandria
Hi Calvin,
Alternatively if you have got a bit more time, you could leave all the hard work to us and add the Alexandria Extension (ETAL) on to your trip?
1 night / 2 days - 64 gbp per person if there is two or more of you, 71 gbp if its just you!
Let us know!
Amy
Re: train to Alexandria
Hello,
Thank you for your replies. Probably won't have enough time for the entire Alexandria extension, so it's nice to know it's easy to manage on your own if need be. That brings me to another question-- Amy, are there any guided Cairo extension tours? We were looking at an assortment of areas within Cairo to explore on our free days, but have read that certain places such as the city of the dead are best toured with a guide.
Thanks again!
Re: train to Alexandria
Hello Calvin,
Thanks for your post.
Whilst we do no offer any guided extension tours of Cairo, these can be arranged very easily locally. Your Tour Leader will be able to arrange one of these no worries. However Egyptians are fantastic people, really hospitable and so even without a guide you will have no problems finding your way around. Just try to make sure that you don't end up in his brothers carpet shop at the end!
All the best,
Robert
