Hi All
I'm doing the Egypt & Jordan Caravan starting on the 20th of January and I was looking for opinions on where I should go for one of my free days in the middle of the tour. I have 2 free days in Cairo and I was thinking of doing a day trip to Alexandria by train or a day trip to Memphis, Saqqara & Dahshur.
So which one would you recommend I do. I have no real preference yet but will only have time to do one of them.

Hello Adam,
Both of your ideas are good. Alexandria is not like anywhere else you will go in Egypt. If you are a lover of the sea than this is the place to go. Im not sure that one day is really enough, as distance wise it's a fair haul to & from Cairo for a day trip.
Memphis, Saqqara & Dashur however very easy to organise & an easy day. I would also suggest you consider including the collapsed Pyramid of Meidum. However if you are just after an easy day, I would stick to Memphis, Saqqara & Dashur. It is quite easy to arrange a taxi to collect you from the Hotel & wait for you at each site. You pay for the taxi when you arrive back at your Hotel, just ensure you agree on price before you leave. This can be organised through the staff at the Hotel.

I would recommend you stay in Cairo - there is a billion and 7 things to do.
I would certianly suggest you make your way to the museum - sure you do it with the group - but you only see some selected highlights and if you are really into Egypt you will spend a whole morning or afternoon there.
I would also say go to Old Cairo/Christian sector.
Venture to the bazaar.
Go to Pizza Hut by the Giza pyramids at dusk and watch the light show for free.
I spent a WHOLE DAY at Saqqara... I was totally into the Mastabas - and there is just so much to see there.

I did this trip last year and took a day trip to Alexandria in the days 'in between'.
Alexandria is quite different to Cairo and not really as touristy, but has some neat things to see - we spent quite a bit of time at Fort Qaitbey, which is Arabic not Pharonic, so quite different to all the temples etc that you will have seen down the Nile.
You'll enjoy doing either option

I just returned from Egypt and Jordan Caravan and had the same concerns for the inbetween days. Our tour leader arranged a day trip to Alexandria and 9 of us did that. It was by minivan and was quite reasonably priced because of the amount of people who went. The other day we went back to the Egyptian Museum as the short time we had on day two was not enough. They also arranged day trip to Memphis, Sakkara and Dashur for the second day. We didn't do that trip as we had gone there on our own before the tour started.

Thanks for the advice.
I plan to go to the egyption museum on the first day when there is nothing planned and also go to the bazaar and other shopping to get some of that out of the way.

Before I went myself, I'd probably have said "Alexandria."
But it really depends on what you enjoy most.
Having been there, I'd opt for staying in the Cairo area, visiting either Saqqara/Dahshur/Memphis or Coptic Cairo and not spending all that time traveling back and forth to Alexandria.
