Hi, we've just booked the family Pharaohs and feluccas trip for our family. Dinners arn't included and we are interested in what food we need to get our 2 youngest ( 10 and 14 ) used to.
Any ideas on cost would be good. We are coming from Australia so exchange rate can be a problem
Tunisia was really expensive for us!
Thanks

Re: Food in Egypt
Hi,
The exchange rate won't be a problem for you. The current exchange rate is nearly 5 Egyptian pounds to the Aussie dollar. If you want to keep an eye on the exchange rate, use www.xe.com/ucc. This gives you live rates. A huge lunch at somewhere like Felfallas (a very good clean restaurant near Giza that you will probably stop at when you visit the Pyramids)will only cost you around 20 EGP or around $4.00.
As far as getting your kids used to the food, it probably depends on how fussy they are, but you can get "Western" food at many restaurants. Failing that, it is very much like Greek or Lebanese food - falafel, kebabs, houmous, dips, flat bread etc. If your children are really fussy, there are quite a few fast food chains around like Burger King, MacDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc. I hope they will eat local food as it is really cheap and VERY tasty.
I hope this helps and we hope you enjoy your trip!!

Re: Food in Egypt
It's good to know that there'll be almost anything the kids will eat, but what about my husband? He is a vegetarian. How will he fair? We're booked for July 2005.
Re: Food in Egypt
Vegetarian?? Not a problem!!
Egyptian food is virtually one extreme or the other! Either so meat laden it would give a pack of lions a run for their money or completely vegetarian. There are a lot of bean, chick pea etc etc dishes, okra, egg plant, rice, green leaf vegetables. You could quite happily eat non-meat dishes from one end of Egypt to the other. They do use a lot of oil in dishes though.
Hope that helps.
