Hi ImTrav,
I'm going on the Amazing Ecuador tour in Feb 2008, and I'm trying to work out if I need to take Malaria medication. As far as I can see, I would only need it for the trip into the Amazon, but it depends whereabout you are going, and I'm not sure where exactly we are going. Are you able to either let me know whereabouts we should be going, or give me some advice on if malaria medication is needed on this tour?
Thanks,
June

Re: Amazing Ecuador
Hello June,
Many thanks for your query. I would recommend having a chat with your local GP regarding travel health advice. There is a great website that is very helpful www.1stcontact.co.uk
I hope that this helps, have a great holiday.

Re: Amazing Ecuador
Thanks, but I need more specific information about where we are going - in the travel dossier for this trip it just says "The Amazon" and it seems to depends where in the Amazon as to what the risk is, so if you can give a specific area or place name, then I know which area I can say to the travel health experts ...

June
Re: Amazing Ecuador
Hello Junee,
You will find that alot of the medical advice is similar for most parts of the Amazon. However you stop in a place called Banos.
Hope this helps!

Re: Amazing Ecuador
Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but actually, Banos is where we go AFTER we have stayed in the Amazon at a jungle lodge for 2 nights - it is this location that I am after, and it is a bit borderline if it's in the low or high risk area, so it would be useful to know whereabouts it is located.
See this map: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/malariamaps/ecuador.htm
which shows that depending how far into the amazon rainforest you go the risk of malaria increases, which is whay I would like more information on whereabouts we are going. eg if we are going no further east than Tena, then we are not going into a high risk area, but if we are going further east than Misahualli, we may well be in a high risk area.
Thanks,
June
