Hi there,
After going off to travelex and purchasing $500AU of Chinese RMB, have just read of customs website that it is prohibited to bring in RMB in cash.
Any thoughts on this??? I am a law abiding traveller and am confused by the fact that travelex can sell it when you can't take cash in or out of the country?????
Your advice please Mr Robtrav

Re: brining cash RMB into China

Hey Briony,

Thanks for your post.

As far as I was aware there are currently no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency you can take into China, only having to declare amounts over US$5000 on arrival. So I cannot imagine $500AU worth of RMB being a problem at all. Perhaps check customs again and maybe even send them an email as I would be very surprised if this is the case, and very much doubt that Travelex would not be aware of this being specialists.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

Mr Robtrav

Re: brining cash RMB into China

Hi there Rob,
Just thought i would send you the link to the customs page I looked at. I have also been on alternative customs pages and found the same thing.

It clearly states that it is prohibited to bring in renminbi in cash.
I phoned travelex and they have no idea about this.
Just thought i would throw this out there to you.

Re: brining cash RMB into China

HI Rob,
I leave on Friday morning for China (going in early before my tour).
I spoke to travelx and they showed me their currency guide for this year. It says that people can take up to 6000 yuan into China no probs (About $1000AU). but I am not convinced.
I appreciate you looking into this fo rme.
Thanks again
Briony

As I said...all help grtefully accepted.
Now I have found this link, I feel slightly better, but all the same, a definitive answer would be great

Hi Briony,

Just covering for Robert as he's off today,
I've just had a message from my Destination manager who works and lives in China and has advised that you will not have any problems bringing this amount of currency into China.

I hope this puts your mind at rest and that you have a fantastic tour.

Kind regards
Gemma
