I am going on the Hola Peru tour departing 21st December. We will be trekking the Inca Trail in early January, but I am very confused about what sort of clothing I need to take. I was going to buy some zip off walking trousers, but I'm not sure whether I need lightweight ones because I'll be hot walking, or whether it will be cold due to the altitude - can you give me some idea of the sort of temperature in comparison to the UK. I know it will be cold at night so I need a good sleeping bag etc, but does it get much warmer during the day, or will it be cold the whole time? Want to make sure I buy the right sort of stuff!
Thanks

Hello Dani_Purple
Thanks so much for getting in touch.
The ideal trousers that you should consider buying is definately medium to light-weight zip-off trousers, as you will get very warm while you hike and will need to be well ventilated.
The altitude will indeed make it colder, but you should just bring thermals, gloves, a woolen/fleece hat and thick socks. Should you get too hot or too cold then you can simply add or take away layers. You should expect temperatures of around 12oC to 18oC the higher up you go. However, low winds will obviously allow you to unwrap a little. Night time temperatures can drop to 5oC or lower, which is why the thermal layering system is the best method to adhere to.

Hello,
Im currently working as a tour leader over here in Peru, and what Tristan advices is perfect. One side note, everything can be hired (rented) upon arrival in Cuzco. The only thing I would really make sure you bring, is some nice zip off trousers, and a good pair of leggings to sleep in. You can hire a sleeping bag if you want for a very cheap price, and save yourself some room on packing. Down jackets can be rented, hiking poles, ponchos, treking boots as well even. Oh, and make sure you bring a few decent pairs of socks to walk in, the ones over here just arnt as good as you can find in the west. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
