Hi.

Have never traveled with a digital SLR before and am looking forward to taking lots of great photos whilst away. Could anyone recommend the best way to store photos whilst we are away, we will be travelling for about 3 months before we will have use of a personal PC.

All recommendations gratefully received!!
Cheers.
Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your question.

Depending on your budget, you'll find in most major cities, particularly those on traditional Round the World routes, that internet caf

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

i think you can get small portable hardrives which read SD/ flash cards. you just put the card in and it will copy all the pictures onto its memory. this is handy if you are nowhere near a computer when you run out of room on the SD card. you can fit quite a lot on them and then you can upload them to a computer when you find one.
my friend got one for about

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

I took the generic version of the smartdisk photobank http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ItemsDisplay?itemID=169951&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&departmentId=10404&categoryId=10955&order=ASC&sortKey=default

on my china trip last november. I highly recommend it. You can buy just the housing from some of the computer stores and add your own hard disk up to 120GB.

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

I hope you enjoy your DSLR as much as I have. This is probably superfluous advice but be very careful changing lenses over, particularly in dusty environments. Professional cleaning of sensor plates is expensive. The storage devices quoted ( or similar) have been around for at least 18 months. I haven't seen any that have a viewer incorporated in them. 4gb cards are on sale now, which even with 3Mp photo size allows a lot of photos. I'm staying with SD cards for now. I had a 400 Gb external hard drive ( desktop size not laptop size)made up for me ($Aus 240).saves having DVDs all over the place.

The Epson P5000 does have a viewer built in but I find that the extra size, weight, and price weren't worth the convenience of seeing the images. Fellow photographer friends of mine do have the P5000 and have travelled extensively with it and love it.

And yes, Waynew's advice is spot on regarding dirty ccd sensors. Some cameras have a built in method for sensor self cleaning but I am not sure how trusting I would be of those in a very dirty environment. For those enviroments it is worth having a small point and shoot.

Have fun on your trip!

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Thanks guys for your continued input on this subject. Perhaps we should open a new forum all about travel photography?! Especially when you consider the countless opportunities available to capture some memorable photographs on an Imaginative Traveller tour?! Maybe somebody would like to be the resident travel photography expert in the new forum? Let me know what you all think and let us know how your new toy works out Debbie.

Brendan

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Hi Debbie,

The links I included in the post above are links to my own personal website. The site itself was nothing fancy and something that I put together before sites like Flickr, shutterfly, photobucket, and some of the other popular photo sharing sites exploded in popularity. Many people now use facebook to add personal and travel related photo albums, including some of the illustrious Imtrav travel leaders.

If you just want to add a link to another webpage, like what I did with the Epson P5000 link a few posts above, just click on the URL button directly below the Add Reply button when replying to a post. This will bring up a little window allowing you to paste the link and then another window for you to type in the text you would like to appear.

Hope this helps.

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Thanks Jetblast and Debbie,

I hope it arrives soon Debbie and thanks for the piccies Tim. I will suggest to the web team the idea of a forum dedicated to the practice of travel photography; a resource where travellers can ask questions about photographic equipment, taking pictures and displaying them online; then people who know about the subject (jetblast!) can help others based on their own experiences, should they like to do so.

Regards,
Brendan

But seriously this is something I would love to do, have a website so that I could show everyone my pics!! Will have to get motivated & arrange someone to do this for me.

Thanks for the info..........Debbie

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Hi Debbie,

I like to toy around with building websites too. I built www.stowmarkettoairport.co.uk for my taxi-driving friend last year. I would offer to help but I'm a little tied up for time outside of work at the moment (and I aint very good!).

If you take the plunge and teach yourself feel free to email me if you get stuck with anything, though I will have to finish my work emails first and can't promise that I will be able to help! My own website badly needs rebuilding and I'd like to sort my own pictures out properly on there. What we need is a massive database of traveller-submitted photos on the Imtrav website, right?!

Brendan

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Debbie,

You could try out Google's Picasa and see if that meets your needs. It looks pretty simple to use.

Brendan,

I'm wondering if having a photography subforum of the websites and holiday pics forum might work. Some subforums could be: Post your best shot, technical help with equipment or photos/methods, helpful equipment for traveller's (like the digi drive potobank), composition tips, tips for respecting cultures when shooting in different parts of the world, etc.

Just thought I'd throw these into the mix as a starting point.

Hi Jetblast,

Yeah, I like the sound of those, it's a good idea, especially the respecting cultures bit. Keep them coming and I'll see what I can do.

Brendan

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

When I travelled for an extensive amount of time last year I used my Ipod to store pictures. If you have an Ipod with large enough memory you can buy and camera adaptor (I think around $25 USD) that allows you to store your pics via your camera's USB cable.

One note though, this device uses battery power from your Ipod and can take a little while. I transfered around 175 4MP pics and it nearly drained all my power from my Ipod.

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

The beauty of devices like the Smartdisk/Digidrive Photobank, and the Epson P5000, is that because the memory card plugs into the unit directly, transfers are very quick. I can dump a full 2 GB CF card in a matter of just a few minutes. I hardly ever have to charge the unit, either on a two week trip. My storage requirements are astronomical, around 14MB a photo, so I am using it alot!

I don't know if this still applies as I don't have an Ipod myself but I have heard that they can lock up and the only way to bring them back to life is to reset them which results in data loss. I'd hate to have all my photos on a trip wiped out because the unit locked up. Still, the ipod route might be a good alternative to some travellers that need to dump their photos without spending much additional money.

Brendan,
I'll give some more thought to forum topics/ideas and either post or PM you when I've got something useful. I'd definitely like to see, and participate in, a forum designed around travel photography.

Re: Digital Camera and Storage.

Hi Jetblast,

Sounds like a plan; I'm glad you are interested, will see what I can do and will keep you posted.

I've reset my ipod a couple of times when it has crashed, which has never led to any data loss although it is a little scary and I would imagine even more so if I had lots of pictures stored on there!

Brendan

Hi Brendan,

I would also be interested in a forum devoted to travel photography. Whilst I am strictly an amateur, Im still darn good at what i shoot!!

Would love to share how I got a particular shot via use of polarising filters etc!!

Looking forward to this.....Debbie

PS Im still working out how I can share my pics!!

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. I am building a case for a new forum and this will help in my quest! I will see what we can come up with.
