I really hate using travellers cheques - I usually just use credit cards and atms when I travel. However, I realise that in some parts of egypt, I won't be able to use either. Will I have problems exchanging AUD in egypt? or must I have a stash of USD? Will I get by with AMEX in the larger cities? Or should I get an alternate credit card? Thanks for your help.

Re: Egypt - Money Exchange
Hello Plastic,
You should be able to exchange aussie money fairly easily at any of the money exchanges in Egypt (there are lots of them). But I would suggest that you take some travellers cheques in USD.
Have a great holiday, wish I could join you.
Re: Egypt - Money Exchange
Hi Plastic,
In another post on this form I suggested strongly that travellers do NOT reply on ATM cards as the machines are only certain to work in Cairo. Credit cards are also another way of obtaining cash but that procedure is not easy and if you are replying on this method to supply cash then you may find youself in a difficult position.
Australian currency is not common and outside of Cairo you will find it not so easy to exchange as you would USD.
Stick to Travellers cheques for the majority of your cash. ATM in Cairo is available but otherwise it's cash in USD or STG or DM's.

Re: Egypt - Money Exchange
Hello Plastic,
After reading Marty's reply, I did some more thinking & have to agree with him. I only exchanged aussie dollars in Cairo, so I hope I haven't led you astray. I would use travellers cheques in USD. They are quite easy to cash in Egypt.
Just have the best holiday, you will be in good hands. If your Tour Leader is a chap named Ramy, please give him a big hello from me & warm wishes to his family.
