Hi

I've just recently had my jabs for my trip to Thailand and was advised by the nurse that I wouldn't need to take Malaria tablets unless I was going to the border areas or Ko Cheng. Is this right? I'm going on the wilderness trek to Thailand and I can't see that I'm going near these areas (although my geography is notoriously bad!) Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Re: Malaria and Thailand!

It's a personal decision whether or not to take the tablets but I am happy to pass on info I know.

I did the Wilderness adventure in dec (amazing!) and chose not to take them. They have many side effects and I did not want to take them unless absolutely necessary. According to my Dr if I become ill with a high fever be sure to call right away for blood tests to be done for one year after returning.

At present there is "no risk" of malaria in Bangkok, Chaing Mai, or Phuket. Minimal risk at the very borders of Camebodia, Laos, and Bhurma.

The hilltribe trekking we did was not in those areas but was closer to Chaing Mai. Also I did not notice many Mosquitos and was not bitten much. I did you good spray, 25 % DEET, and would reccomend a mosquito net if you have concerns ( They were not available as stated in the itinerary.

I will also share most of my group took the pills, but the guide, who travels in Bhurma, Laos etc, was not taking them.

I hope this is helpful.
