Hi there!
I would love some advice on Malaria tablets as I went to the doctors only this week and was told I didn't need any! This is because my tour (Sichuan Explorer in April) was not travelling in the dangerous areas indicated on their map, so to them it meant I would not need to take any. (I was going to be given Malarone tablets).
However, I am not comfortable with this and said I'd do some research and get back to them. They were fine about this because at the end of the day I have to pay for the tablets so I can have them if I want! I wondered whether it was possible to speak to my tour leader or someone who would be able to give me a definite answer as to what to do with my dilemma? I would personally feel more comfortable taking the tablets regardless of not being in the deadly risky areas. I’ve also been recommended a website where you can by Paludrine/Avloclor (travelpharm.com) travel pack (seven weeks supply) so could consider taking these (they are cheaper too!)?
Many thanks,
Mary

Dear Mary,
Many thanks for your post. I sympathise with the mixed messages you have been receiving from various places and know that feeling of confusion only too well when deciding whether malaria tablets are necessary or not when embarking on the latest travels.
As we are not here at Imaginative Traveller medical professionals I'm very sorry to tell you we can't give you the definitive answer you are looking for. You are right to take the question of malaria very seriously, it can be a deadly disease and only you can decide whose advice to follow when it comes to malaria tablets. Whatever you decide, please also remember that you should still use mosquito repellent even if you are on anti malarial tablets, to avoid getting bitten in the first place.
As well as your doctor, pharmacist or travel health clinic I'd also recommend this website as a good source of information:

I hope this is of some help; have a wonderful time in China.
