My husband and I are taking the Kingdoms of the Nile trip in the middle of Feb. next year. I am also confused about whether to take the anti-malarial pills. According to the CDC, the only area in Egypt where there is a malarial concern is at El Faiyum. The Kingdoms tour does go there. Thus, to be on the safe side I would take the pills. On the other hand, we will only be there for a few hours and I don't think that we are likely to be there at dusk, when the mosquitoes bite. Plus, sometimes the pills can make you sick. What has been your experience? To your knowledge, have any of your visitors ever gotten malaria? Is the possibility too remote to worry about, especially if we use bug spray and wear clothing that covers our arms and legs?

Re: Malarial Pills
Hello Joan,
This is a question that arises often. While many publications and health centers will advise travellers to take a course of anti-malarial pills we always suggest you follow your Doctors advice.
In the ten years I have been living and working in Egypt I have never come across anyone who caught malaria. Typhoid and Hepatitis are not common but every now and then they do arise, mainly with foreigners living there for long periods. Of course locals get these diseases often.
No matter how short your trip is, if your health center or Doctor suggests you carry them and complete a course we could not go against their advice.
Cheers
