I am going on the Mayan Explorer tour in August and am starting to think about the things I need to take/buy. I've read all the dossiers/pre-travel documents but I'm unsure about some things and can't find the relevant info. Do I need a sleeping bag? If so, what type would be the best? Also what type of hiking boots would be good? Any other essentials?

Hi Adele,

Thanks for using the forums! This is a fantastic tour and I can personally recommend it as I went on it in summer 2006 and had a brilliant time.

You don't need to take a sleeping bag on this tour. In the jungle you will be staying in hammocks and I don't know if you have ever tried to get into a sleeping bag whilst in a hammock but it would be a challenge and probably quite entertaining for anyone watching! You also wouldn't want to carry it through the jungle for 3 days. Blankets are provided for the hammocks however please bear in mind these are jungle blankets and are not cleaned each week so if you prefer you could take along a lightweight sleeping sheet to go between the blanket and your skin. I did take one but to be honest I didn't use it. You could also just have a change of clothes/spare socks for sleeping in.

I had basic Teva style walking shoes which were great. Most people on the group had comfy walking shoes, however there was one person who had trainers on and did fine as well. You will be likely to get muddy on certain parts of the trail so a shoe that fits properly on the foot and won't get sucked off into the mud will help! Likewise some bits may be dry and hard packed so it is not muddy going all the way, it is varied and really nice walking.

Also take along a decent torch for when you are in the jungle. I had an LED torch called a Cyber Lite which is keyring sized but gives a lot of light out. I liked it as it was powerful, small, and can be clipped onto bags/zips on clothing. You can get them in camping shops everywhere I believe.

I hope this helps - any other questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes
Kelly
