Hi! I'm just wondering what the safety/security situation in Pakistan is like and whether the Hunza Highway Tour is still running? The foreign office seem to be advising against travelling to Gilgit on the Karakoram Highway - suggesting instead that people fly there. An update would be appreciated as I am interested in booking for this tour. Thanks.

Re: Pakistan Query

Hello,

Thanks for the posting.

We are aware that the foreign office website is currently advising to only travel to Gilgit by Air and obviously this has implications regarding your booking.

We are liaising with our overseas office in Pakistan at the moment and hope to be able to provide an update by mid next week.

Please watch this space or either email online@imtrav.net for the latest update.

Hi Mercedes,

Thanks for the reminder.

We are looking into this but there has been no update at present. An update will be posted in answer to your orginal query as and when it becomes available.

Re: Pakistan Query

Hi Mercedes,

We received the following update a short while ago:

Since mid-July 2005, sectarian tensions in the Gilgit area have risen sharply and have included violent attacks. You should only travel to Gilgit by air, and avoid the centre of town. Road travel direct from the airport north to Baltistan and the Hunza valley is possible. Caution should be exercised when travelling by road along the Karakorum Highway (KKH). You are advised to join a police guarded convoy and travel in daylight hours on the KKH.

Our Hunza Highroad tour visits Gilgit and travels on the Karakorum Highway. The Imaginative Traveller is currently in contact with our destination office about this and we will be issuing a policy concerning our remaining 2006 tours later this week.

I hope this helps.

Re: Pakistan Query

Hello again!

Will there ever be any news on this? There's a tour leaving at the end of this month and further ones in Sept./Oct. Presumably the people booked onto these will be pretty concerned?

I am interested in booking but really can't consider it without the relevant info.

Re: Pakistan Query

OK, scrap that! I see there are no places available on any tours in 2005 :-(

Are these trips full or are they not actually running?

Re: Pakistan Query

Hello Mercedes,

Thanks for the posting.

Please accept my apologies for the lack of response to date.

This tour will cease to operate in the future based on the current Foreign Office advice though obviously this may well change depending upon the Foreign Office advise and local information.

We are currently advising people already booked on this tour with the Imaginative traveller regarding the current situation.

Sorry once again for the late responses.

Re: Pakistan Query

Really sorry to hear that the tours have been cancelled. I hope they are up and running again soon. Looks like I'll have to visit Pakistan independently if I want to include it on my round-the-world itinerary.

Thanks for the info.
