Hi,
My husband and I are travelling on the Mayan Explorer to Guatemala and Belize. We have had all the vaccinations reccommended apart from Rabies.
We have been advised we will need this if we will be unable to get medical attention within 24 hours at any point throughout the trip. As we are doing a jungle trek, I am wondering if it may be worth having?
Could you please give me any advise on this?
Thanks, Sarah

Hello Sarah,
Thanks for posting on the forums - good choice of tour!
You may have read my replies to this sort of question on other posts so our apologies but we aren't medically qualified to advise you on whether to have a rabies vaccination or not.
During the jungle trek you wouldn't realistically be more than 24 hours away from medical attention. The trek is 3 days but if anything happened to you on the first or second days you could go back the way you came, and on the third day you would be reaching Tikal that afternoon.
I have done this tour and, while I can't instruct you what to do, I can share with you what I personally did, and neither I nor my other group-mates (to my knowledge) had the rabies shots. Having said this, you are the only person who can make this decision and it's important you make your own decision about what advice to follow on this.
You will have an amazing time on this trip. Out of all the tours I have done this one stood out as being really memorable with a fantastic itinerary and obviously fab group members and tour leader (if he is reading)! Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me any time.
Best regards
Kelly
I've had the rabies vaccination, but that was more to do with the fact I was booked on a different tour that required it which then got cancelled. I probably wouldn't have bothered otherwise - it set me back £141 and 3 dead arms!!!!!
