I have to get a sleeping pad for my desert trek. I know a lot of it is personal preference. I was wondering if there is a particular favorite type. Manual inflate, self inflating or solid? Thanks.

Sleeping pads
Hi ChiefBrody,
As you say, it's down to individual preference, and also budget. I personally am fine with a solid rolling one, but they obviously take up more space then an inflatable one you could fold down much smaller (however they are very light).
I've seen some self inflating ones that look great, and are probably worth it if you do a lot of camping anyway and will get a lot of use out of it.
It will be good to see other people's opinions too!
Best wishes
Kelly
I have just come back from Peru where I trekked the Inca Trail. I took a foam rolling mat with me, but was given a therma-rest by the trekking company - in my opinion there is no comparison, they are so much more comfortable I would never use a solid mat again (in fact I left it in Peru!). I would say self-inflating too, as you will be too tired after trekking to faff around with inflating a mattress!
Sleeping pads
Chief Brody-
I would recommend a self inflating sleeping pad. I am taking a Therm-A-Rest ProLite 4, size large with me. It weighs only 33 oz and is 1.5 inches thick to keep me off the cold desert floor.
I have used a manual inflation sleeping pad but it took too many breaths and a long time to inflate. Plus, squeezing out all the air in the morning is a real pain!
A solid sleeping pad would take up too much space.
See you in Marrakech!
